CLINICAL SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES

Proficient working with adults and late teens in individual, group, marital, and family therapy. Theoretical base for treatment combines psychodynamic, phenomenological, family systems and strategic principles. Treatment methods have been influenced by short-term dynamic, strategic, solution-focused, and cognitive-behavioral models, in addition to psychoeducational and symptom-management approaches. I tend to think phenomenologically, meaning that I de-emphasize theoretical thinking in favor of an emphasis on discovery, client-defined issues, and the application of techniques congruent with the network of meaning that characterizes the client's experience.

DISORDERS TREATED

Adjustment Disorders
Marital and relationship problems
Depression, Bipolar Disorder and other mood disorders
Parent-Child Conflict
Generalized Anxiety and "Stress"
Work-place conflicts or issues
Domestic Violence
Substance Abuse intertwined with mental health problems
Anger (and Intermittent Explosive Disorder)
Grief, Loss, and Complicated Bereavement
Schizophrenia
Suicidality
Self-Esteem problems
Sexuality issues, and some forms of sexual dysfunction

I have particular interests in these areas:

  • The treatment of depression
  • Stress management
  • Marital and relationship adjustment
  • The needs and challenges of single people
  • Existential concerns (estrangement from others, questions of life meaning or purpose, conflicts about death)

I am open to creative things like co-therapy, in-home treatment (if warranted), developing group services to serve a need in the community, pro bono consultation, and broad-based collaboration involving different systems (schools, community groups, in-patient psychiatric units, substance abuse treatment programs, etc.).

I also provide fee-based consultation to businesses, non-profit agencies, and individuals.
